Tent heater BTU & AC sensible load calculator

Explore preliminary tent heat-loss and sensible cooling loads using dimensions, U-value, air changes and temperature difference. No equipment safety certification.

Defaults are a calculation example, not measured tent properties. Replace U-value, leakage and gains with project-specific values. Dimensions and people inherit the event plan.

Net heating estimate69,828 BTU/h
Sensible cooling estimate144,828 BTU/h12.07 sensible ton equivalent
Approximate envelope area4,560 sqft
Approximate volume22,400 cu ft
Transmission: U × envelope × ΔT91,200 BTU/h
Infiltration: 1.08 × (volume × ACH / 60) × ΔT16,128 BTU/h
People + additional sensible gains37,500 BTU/h

The box model uses floor area for the roof, excludes ground transfer, roof pitch, latent humidity, fresh-air design and duct losses, and assumes air density 0.075 lb/cu ft and heat capacity 0.24 BTU/lb·°F for the 1.08 sensible-heat coefficient. Heating subtracts internal gains; cooling adds them. This is not equipment selection, ventilation design, a safe temperature guarantee or permission to operate combustion equipment inside a tent.

A preliminary load worksheet, with explicit assumptions

This tool estimates heat transfer through a simple tent-shaped box, then adds an infiltration approximation and sensible internal gains. The roof uses the floor’s horizontal area, side area is perimeter × wall height, and volume is floor area × height. An actual pitched roof and ground contact can change those quantities. The default U-value, two air changes per hour and per-person gain are example inputs; they are not certified properties of your tent.

Transmission BTU/h = U × approximate envelope sqft × temperature difference °F

Infiltration BTU/h = 1.08 × (volume × air changes / 60) × temperature difference

Heating = max(0, transmission + infiltration − internal gains)

Sensible cooling = transmission + infiltration + internal gains

The 1.08 coefficient is a standard-air sensible approximation. A sensible ton equivalent is the computed sensible BTU/h divided by 12,000; it is not complete AC capacity. Latent humidity, required fresh air, roof pitch, open doors, duct losses, sun exposure and equipment performance require a more complete design. Enter a project-specific solar/equipment gain if available rather than assuming zero represents actual conditions.

Bring the inputs to a qualified supplier

Confirm the tent construction, enclosure, weather conditions, occupants, ventilation requirements and electrical supply. This worksheet does not select a heater, AC unit, fuel, installation location or safe clearance and cannot guarantee indoor conditions. No combustion appliance is recommended for operation inside a tent. Never use a fuel-burning heater in a camping tent.

Frequently asked questions about tent sizing

Is the cooling tonnage a complete AC recommendation?

No. Dividing the sensible cooling estimate by 12,000 gives only a sensible-load equivalent. Humidity and latent loads, fresh-air requirements, duct losses, open doors, solar exposure and actual tent construction require a professional equipment design.

Can this tool recommend a heater inside a tent?

No. It calculates a simplified thermal load only and does not select fuel, combustion appliances, ventilation, installation or safe clearances. Use a qualified supplier and the applicable equipment instructions and local requirements. Never use a fuel-burning heater in a camping tent.
