Tent ballast weight & stake planning calculator

Convert supplier-specified ballast per anchor into total weight, whole blocks and transport mass. Use a separate checklist for staking and site engineering.

Weight & logistics arithmetic

Enter a valid required weight for every anchor group and a block weight to calculate totals. No safe anchoring weight can be inferred from the tent area.

Missing engineering inputs include the exact tent model, design wind and exposure, sidewalls, soil or foundation, anchor reactions and connection details. Obtain the manufacturer’s or engineer’s schedule. Water volume and average weight per leg cannot replace it.

From a supplied anchor requirement to a logistics list

This tool needs the manufacturer’s or engineer’s requirement at each type of anchor. Enter separate groups if corners and intermediate attachments differ. For each anchor, blocks equal ceil(required lb / actual block lb). Multiply by anchors in that group, then sum the groups. Total delivered weight can exceed the prescribed sum because each anchor rounds independently.

Blocks per anchor = ceil(supplied required lb per anchor / actual block lb)

Total blocks = sum(anchors in group × blocks per anchor)

Transport mass = total blocks × actual block lb

Worked arithmetic only: four anchors with a supplied requirement of 750 lb each and 500 lb blocks need two blocks at each anchor, eight blocks total, or 4,000 lb delivered. That example does not establish a safe requirement or approve that block size, stacking or connection arrangement.

Why roof area does not set an anchoring weight

The ATA / IFAI ballasting presentation points to manufacturer specifications and discusses attachment forces and tipping. Its 10–15 lb per sqft discussion is an unofficial heuristic, not a safe weight recommendation for any roof, sidewall or wind condition. Dividing a total by perimeter legs cannot verify individual reactions, sliding or overturning.

Get the exact model and engineering drawing revision, wind/exposure assumptions, wall configuration, soil or foundation details, attachment reactions and connector geometry. The 20 × 40 ft Celina Master Series manual has a model-specific minimum staking layout and warns that ordinary kit staking may not meet site requirements. Its nominal hardware list is not permission to substitute ballast or approve a site.

Stake and transport checklist

No water-barrel equivalence or stake holding capacity is calculated here. A unit conversion cannot validate a ballast material, friction coefficient, attachment or foundation.

Frequently asked questions about tent sizing

How much ballast is needed to anchor a tent on concrete?

Canopy area alone cannot determine a safe ballast weight. Obtain a model- and site-specific per-anchor requirement from the manufacturer or engineer. The ballast tool totals those supplied weights and rounds blocks separately at each anchor; it does not assess wind, sliding, overturning or the connection system.

Why round ballast blocks separately at each anchor?

A total divided across all legs can hide a shortfall at an individual attachment. For each supplied anchor group, blocks per anchor equal ceil(required pounds per anchor / pounds per block). The sum is a logistics quantity. It does not approve stacking, connections, foundation loads or the ballast type.
